It would be easier to ignore them. Standing alone they are simply three numbers. Given the context in which they were presented, they were compelling, attention grabbing, and heart breaking.
“300,000”
“12”
“7”
Not just any three numbers, but three numbers powerful enough to potentially change the way you forever look at success.
I have spent years asking people the question, “what is success ___________________ ?
Common answers to fill in the blank are happiness, wealth, and health. For good measure some might throw in fame.
But, when you look around, you see a world filled with people who have wealth and fame yet are miserable. There are plenty of high achievers who have accomplished countless goals, earned a lot of money, acquired homes, cars, and possessions, yet are unhappy and discouraged. You have likely heard someone say, or said yourself;
- When I buy _____________, I will be successful.
- When I win ____________, I will be successful.
- When I am on the cover of _______________, I will be successful.
- When I get invited to / get accepted to ______________, I will be successful.
When we define success based on events, acknowledgement, and purchases that fill in the blank we may experience momentary success, but it won’t fill the hole. So, what is success and what does it have to do with three numbers?
“Success is the identification of your most important roles, values, and goals, and living your personal and professional life in accordance with your roles, values, and goals.”
Now, what does it have to do with these three numbers? I spent Sunday afternoon, at a meeting, looking for an answer as to how ImpACTful Notes will give $1,000,000 to the hungry, homeless and suffering.
When I walked into the room and sat down, I was unaware of how big the need was.
- 300,000: the number of "Commercially, Sexually, Exploited Children" (CSEC) in the United States.
- 12: the average age of the girls lured and kidnapped into “Life in the Life.”
- 7: the average life span of a girl, at that point, due to risk of overdose, STDs, suicide and homicide.
Two young women, ages 19 and 21, told their stories what they call, “Life in the Life.” They were rescued by the love, commitment, and devotion of one man who fully understands true success? His role is that of a crusader. His values are grounded in the sanctity and value of human life, and the saving grace of Jesus Christ. His goal is to save these young women even if he has to do it one at a time.
He is one man who is living the truth about success every day. He asked for others to come along side him, share the need, and take these three numbers to heart.
“You may choose to look the other way, but you can never say again that you did not know.”
—William Wilberforce

Great words Jim! We throw the word "success" around all the time without giving much thought to how we actually define success. You are so right about success not really having to do with possessions. A temporal perspective seems to be the most popular but an eternal perspective is the most impactful. The only two things that will last forever are God and people!
Way to go my friend. You have hit the nail on the head!
Thanks Keith! Our view and efforts change so much when we get our roles in the right order.
