Why I Decided to Make a Change

A couple weeks ago I was asked to speak to a group of men about why I decided to start writing this blog, launch ImpACTful Notes, and write “14 Strategies to Make 2014 Your Breakthrough Year.” As I was preparing I came to a couple conclusions.

  1. The decision to change course or do something bold is commonly born out of adversity, boredom or a combination of both.
  2. In the absence of encouragement the passion to press on, in the face of challenges, leads us to quit.

Adversity and boredom lead me to ask myself an important question; if I had a one-to-one, face-to-face with God today, what would he say about my priorities and my to-do list? I quickly decided I was not ready for a final review. I needed to get success right.

“Success is the identification of roles, values and goals and living your personal and professional life in accordance with your most important roles, values, and goals.”

My priorities and to-do-list were out of alignment. Deciding to focus on writing, speaking and coaching was a choice to align my time, talent and resources with my most important roles and goals? At the end of my presentation I was asked, “What makes your book any different than the thousands of motivational books that have been written through the years?” Good question!

I feel strongly about my calling as a coach and leader to encourage people to discover their dreams and lead lives of impact. There have been many days where I have wondered if this work really matters. Was my work going to make a difference? Last night my question was answered when I opened a very unexpected email.

Jim,

“I recently finished “14 Strategies to Make 2014 Your Breakthrough Year” and to be honest, am having a difficult time putting into words the profound and positive impact your book is currently having on my life. I've read other self-help/motivational books in the past, but nothing has ever moved me like this. Your to the point, clear-cut strategies…have impacted me in a way that I don't think I'll ever be the same. I highlighted and made notes while I was reading, and when I was done, I immediately began writing, following your step-by-step plan. Thank you doesn't seem enough. It's truly helped me define the direction of my life…It has made such a difference, and for the first time in such a long time, I am so eager to get started on the next chapter of exploring my passion…”

God gifts each of us with exceptional talents. No one else has your gifts, your talents, or your unique place in history to make an impact.

Thanks for reading! Who are you going to encourage today? Who do should you thank for encouraging you?
