About

I am the Founder of Impactful Notes. Impactfulnotes.com is dedicated to “encouraging success one note at a time” by delivering inspirational, motivational and principle based notes designed to help people fulfill their potential.

This is my personal blog.  It is focused on helping people “get success right.”  Getting success right means understanding and prioritizing the roles you play and aligning your time, talent and money with your most important roles in order to become truly invaluable to the people who matter most in your life.

I write about topics that support being intentional about being more, doing more and giving more.  My mission is to help you “get success right” so you can increase the quality of your impact on your family, your work, and your community.

My Biography

My designs on success and achievement started early.  In the third grade, I wanted to be President of the United States.  I changed course my senior year of high school when I told my favorite teacher, Mr. Jones, it was not necessary to complete the recommendation for my application to Harvard because I had decided instead to pursue my dream to play basketball.  I went to Pacific Lutheran University largely to play basketball.  They loved my heart, my ambition, and work-ethic but it was not enough to overcome my lack of height and talent.  Not sure of what I wanted to do I transferred to Washington State University.

While I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do, I desired to be the best.

  • Graduated from Washington State University with honors.
  • Awarded “Outstanding Senior in Marketing”
  • Was a “Top College Agent” for Northwestern Mutual Life
  • Awarded Top New Sales Representative Owens-Corning Fiberglas
  • Awarded Sales Builder Owens-Corning Fiberglas
  • Finished M.B.A., Pepperdine University

I authored How to Win The Achievement Game a self-published guide to building a successful life plan.  While in the midst of getting married, completing an M.B.A., and changing jobs I sold nearly 3,000 copies of the book as I spoke on the topics of success and achievement.  After four award-winning years, in commission sales, in my new job, with a wholesale distributor, I was named Vice President of Sales for this $500MM company at the age of 29.

International Paper acquired the company in 1994 and I rose quickly through a number of leadership roles in both distribution and manufacturing.  After cancer prematurely took the life of a family member, we moved back to Southern California in order to support family and I set significant career advancements on the sideline.  My last role was as a Group Vice President for xpedx where I led a $800MM business with 21 locations and 1,200 employees in the west.  In 2013, after 25 years in a senior corporate position, I took the opportunity to pursue my love of coaching, speaking and writing and formed J. D. Akers & Associates.

I have been married to my wife, Kristi, for 32 years.  We have two boys and live in Southern California.

In my free time, I enjoy golfing, golfing and golfing.  I am a member of Mount of Olives Church in Mission Viejo, California where I serve in a variety of capacities.
